The
game marked the return for both teams after the NHL's three-day holiday
break, and the initial period reflected a bit of rust as the longtime
Metropolitan Division rivals adjusted to game action without prior
practice.
The Capitals struck first in the second period, with
Anthony Mantha scoring at 4:12, extending his point streak to four
games. However, Washington's lead was short-lived, as Miller swiftly
responded at 7:03, leveling the score at 1-1 with a backhander over
goaltender Darcy Kuemper's stick.
New York then seized control,
taking a 2-1 lead when Artemi Panarin capitalized on a power play
opportunity. Panarin's one-timer from Vincent Trocheck's feed found the
back of the net 5:05 later, beating Kuemper's glove.
The Rangers'
special teams excelled, finishing 1 for 3 on the power play and
successfully thwarting both of Washington's man advantages. They outshot
the Capitals 31-26, demonstrating their defensive prowess.
Braden
Schneider extended the lead to 3-1 just 40 seconds after Panarin's
goal, sending a floater from just inside the blue line past Kuemper's
stick side. Despite a few scoring chances for the Capitals, Shesterkin's
standout sliding save on Ivan Miroshnichenko's tip in the third period
maintained the Rangers' lead at 3-1.
K'Andre Miller's second goal
of the game further widened the gap to 4-1, securing the Rangers'
dominance. Alexis Lafreniere's 10th goal of the season at 11:15 marked
the final blow, ending the scoring and solidifying the Rangers' decisive
victory.
With this win, the Rangers continue their strong
performance in the season, maintaining an impressive record and
establishing themselves as a formidable force in the NHL.
